Local Bands
Local Bands, from Goderich and Area, were asked to submit music to have a chance at playing at the Out of the Storm Event. Here are the winning bands!
The Ashgrove
The Ashgrove formed in 1994 and released a demo tape followed by 3 full length albums between 1995 and 2004. Our 1999 release, Photo Album, launched three singles onto playlists at commercial radio stations across Canada, including FM96 (London), K106.3 (Sarnia), The Rock (Chatham) and FM94 (Prince George, BC). The buzz began with Beauty Myth, but took off when Never Change spent three weeks on the “Top 5 Request” chart at FM94 and the video – directed by guitarist Lonny Doherty – received frequent feature play on Much Music’s Indie Spotlight. Songs from Photo Album also received feature play at a list of stations such as CFOX (Vancouver), CJAY (Calgary), Edge 102 (Toronto) and CHOM-FM (Montreal).
Licensing opportunities presented themselves in the 4 years after the release, when television programs such as Dawson’s Creek, Hack, Party of Five, and a made for television movie called Fast Food High all used songs in their programming. The band was also asked to include Photo Album’s ‘Some Way Out’ on the DVD Box Set of the First Season of Joan of Arcadia.
Veterans of the stage, The Ashgrove have shared spots with the Headstones, 54-40, the Killjoys, Danko Jones, Rymes with Orange, See Spot Run and international recording artists K’s Choice, Vertical Horizon, the Verve Pipe while promoting Photo Album and their debut release Somnambulant. The band has also been invited to showcase at prestigious events such as NXNE and Canadian Music Week.
Boy in December
Boy in December is a band of brothers who have been playing together since birth. Growing up in Huron County, the Husseys – Mark (bass), Matt (piano, vocals), Micah (guitar) and Manny (drums) – fell into music one after another, driven to make it, play it and put it out for everyone who’d listen. Coming from a family of nine children, they had a built-in audience from day one. After playing together in the band Silence, and experiencing a rush of success with an ornate, progressive rock sound and show, the brothers came to the point where they had to make a change, and went back into the studio determined to find a new direction. It took them four years to break apart their old sound and rebuild themselves. Working with a new producer, the Husseys began to approach their songs differently, focusing on strong hooks and arena-ready choruses, crafting songs that captured their intensity and integrity as performers and lifted their music to a new level.
Josh Geddis
Josh’s 2008 album “Yellow Tent” was named in the Top 10 albums of 2008 by CHRW (Western Radio’s). This album was recorded at Swamp Songs London. Prior to recording “Yellow Tent” at Swamp Songs Josh tracked a single with Mike Tompkins and recorded a 4 track EP with Dan Santarella at Dansanman Studios in London.
Josh has lived and worked in Huron County / Perth County now for the past 6 years. When he is not performing his own music he is teaching Secondary High School music at St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary School in Clinton, ON.
The Fiends
Craig Harrison – a renegade guitarist who lives by the code of cold steel across his lap; Steven Q. Dawe III – a dreadlocked vagabond whose thunderous bass notes lay waste to civilizations; Brenden Purser – a billionaire tyrant drunk on power, women and drums; and leading them blindly is Gerard Creces – a songwriter possessed by the twin demons of infamy and syntax.
Their catalogue spans genres, mixing from jazz to blues to folk, country, metal and electronic, combining all elements into a stage show that can be geared to suit any crowd… with a few fiendish surprises thrown into the mix.
Decade-long veterans of the Huron County music scene, the band is made up of seasoned performers, Purser and Harrison with Captain Rock and the Empty Threats, Creces and Dawe with Bastid Sonz. Born in and based out of Goderich, their musical lust knows no bounds and when they combine their secret rings of power, they create the unfathomable force known as the Fiends.
