Matthew Good added to the Out of the Storm Line-up
Matthew Good has been added to the line-up of the Out of the Storm fundraising event in Goderich on October 8. He’ll be playing alongside well-known Canadian bands the Arkells, Downchild, Serena Ryder, The Salads, Maestro Fresh Wes and others.
It has been a busy few weeks for the Out of the Storm volunteer committee, who started planning for the event a short 3 weeks ago. The members are really excited about the daylong event. “Things are really starting to come together,” says Matt Hoy, chair of the Out of the Storm committee. “Everyone is workin
g together to create an amazing day, we couldn’t have asked for a better line-up.”
The musical entertainment will kick off at noon with Serena Ryder taking the stage at 2:00 PM, followed by Maestro Fresh Wes at 3:15 PM. Downchild is set to play at 7:30 PM and The Salads with Choclair will perform later in the evening. Matthew Good will be headlining the event with the Arkells. Artists including Celtic duo Taheay and Stacey, Moondog Uproar, Rick Taylor, Dylan Wickens, and Breaching Vista will also perform. Local bands selected from submitted entries (bands chosen on September 30) will play throughout the day.
In addition to a great day of music, many other festivities will be happening on The Square. A large beverage tent, silent auction, food vendors, retail vendors, local artists, tornado information booths and a children’s area are some of the great activities that people will be able to take part in. “This event is for the whole family,” says Hoy. “Attendees will be able to come and go as they please and spend time trying out new activities.”
Susan Armstrong, Goderich BIA Manager, noted that some of the Goderich businesses that were displaced or unable to re-open due to damage will be showcased at the event. “Out of the Storm is a great opportunity to visit the few businesses in the area that have re-opened since the storm,” says Armstrong.
Local artists will be showcased at the event including a photo tent that will display photos of Goderich, both before and after the devastating tornado. Anyone that wants to share their favourite photos of Goderich is asked to submit photos to ootsphototent@gmail.com.
Out of the Storm is a fundraising event to help rebuild, restore and reclaim the Town of Goderich and create awareness about the community, while providing people with a terrific event to look forward to and to remember.
Tickets for the event are just $45.00 and children under 12 accompanied by an adult are free. Arkells, Downchild, Serena Ryder and Others help to raise funds for Goderich at the Out of the Storm event
Canadian music headliners set to perform at the Out of the Storm fundraising concert andfestival on October 8, 2011 (Thanksgiving weekend) on The Square in downtownGoderich.
Following the devastating tornado that hit the Town of Goderich (including the historiccentre of the town, known as The Square) on August 21, a collective group of Goderich and area community organizations began planning for the Out of the Storm fundraising event. “The event will not only help to raise funds, we wantto help boost community moral, raise awareness and give the people in the townsomething to celebrate,” says Hoy.
The bands set to perform have reputations bar none and the unique mix of blues, alternative, rock andrap will bring out people of all ages. 2010 Juno award winning band Arkells will dazzle the crowd with their fun sound and unique lyrics. Downchild, known to many as the Downchild Blues Band, is described by reviewers as “the premier blues band in Canada”. Serena Ryder, 2008 Juno winner for best new artist, will be stopping by for an afternoon set to show the crowd her smooth and beautiful music. Other bands include the The Salads, with special guest Choclair, and Maestro Fresh Wes,with more acts to be announced soon.
A contest was also announced in which local bands would submit their music and the top bands will be chosen to play at the concert.“The committee was overwhelmed with local bands wanting to help out,” says Hoy.“We thought the best way to pick the bands would be to have an outside music committee select the top bands to play.”
Admission for the12-hour event is $45.00 (tax included) with all event proceeds going to the Goderich and Area Disaster Relief Fund that will match funds raised at a 2:1 ratio through the Ontario Disaster Relief Assistance Program (ODRAP) until October 28, 2011. “We knew the town was going to need millions to rebuild,”said Out of the Storm Chairperson Matt Hoy. “We’re all cleaning up, but the town needs a lot of help, and we want tohelp make Goderich ‘the Prettiest Town in Canada’ once again.”
The organizing committee is working closely and in support of the Town of Goderich. Many local sponsors have come on-board to support the event, including the Goderich Signal Star, 104.9 The Beach, CKNX and their partner radio stations,Goderich Print Shop, and BMO Bank of Montreal. “We have been overwhelmed with support from the community,” says Hoy.
“The event will help us demonstrate that although trees and buildings are bent and broken, the people of Goderich are not,” says Hoy. “We hope that everyone will come andhelp us display the spirit of Goderich and it’s people, and help us rebuild, repair and reclaim our town.”
Volunteers are needed to do various types of activities throughout the day. If you areinterested in helping out you can fill the survey out on the website.
